Sun, Sand, and Self-Care: Keeping Your Muscles Happy and Hydrated This Summer

There is nothing quite like summer in Hermosa Beach. Between the long, bright days, beach volleyball matches, afternoon bike rides along The Strand, and just soaking up the ocean breeze, our beautiful coastal home comes completely alive. It is a season of movement, outdoor fun, and high energy.

But while our spirits thrive in the warm weather, the combination of summer heat, increased outdoor activity, and salt water can sometimes take an unexpected toll on our bodies. When we’re sweating more and constantly on the move, our muscle tissues can tighten up faster than usual, leading to stiffness, fatigue, or that familiar morning ache.

The Summer Hydration Connection

We all know that drinking water is essential when it gets warm outside, but we do not always think about how hydration directly affects our muscles. Your muscle tissue is made up of about seventy six percent water. When you run low on fluids, your muscles lose their elasticity, making them work much harder to perform the exact same tasks. This lack of fluid makes you significantly more prone to cramping, knots, and lingering soreness after a day out in the sun.

Think of your muscles like a sponge. When a sponge is wet and hydrated, it is incredibly pliable, flexible, and moves easily. When it dries out, it becomes stiff, brittle, and tough to bend. Massage therapy acts exactly like running water over that dry sponge, manually helping to flush out metabolic waste, encourage fresh blood flow, and restore that deep pliability to your tissues.

Pro-Tip for Beach Days: If you are spending the afternoon by the pier or playing on the sand, try adding a pinch of sea salt or an electrolyte packet to your water bottle. Replenishing those lost minerals is just as important as the water itself to prevent evening muscle spasms.

Beating the Sand Fatigue

Walking, running, or playing sports on the sand is an incredible workout because it forces all the tiny stabilizing muscles in your feet, ankles, and calves to work overtime. While this is fantastic for building strength, it can also lead to severe tightness in the lower body, which often creeps its way up into your lower back.

If you notice that your feet or calves are feeling unusually tight after your beach days, taking a few minutes to roll the arches of your feet over a tennis ball can work wonders. Follow that up with a focused massage session, and we can target those specific stabilizers to keep you moving smoothly and pain free all summer long.

Your Pocket of Peace in the Middle of Summer

With so much going on during these sun-filled months, it is incredibly easy to let your wellness routine slide. But taking an hour out of your busy week to step off the hot pavement, escape into a quiet, cool space, and focus entirely on your physical recovery is the best way to ensure you enjoy the season to its absolute fullest.

The studio table is freshly prepped, the space is cool, and I’m ready to help you wash away the sand tension. Book your next session and let’s get those muscles loosened up.
