We have all been there. You catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror or a window and realize you are shaped exactly like a shrimp. Between hours spent at a desk and the constant pull of our smartphones it is no wonder our shoulders are up by our ears and our lower backs are screaming for help.
As a massage therapist I see the effects of “the slouch” every single day. The good news is that you are not stuck this way. Your body is incredibly adaptable and massage therapy is one of the most effective tools to help you stand taller and move more freely.
The Problem With Staying Still
When we hold the same position for a long time our muscles start to adapt. The muscles in your chest and the front of your neck get tight and short while the muscles in your back get overstretched and weak. This creates a tug of war that your back is currently losing. This does not just look a bit slumped because it actually limits your range of motion and can lead to chronic headaches or shoulder impingement.
How Massage Changes the Game
Think of massage as a manual “reset” button for your soft tissue. Here is how we get you moving again:
- Lengthening the Tight Stuff: We focus on opening up the chest and hip flexors. When these muscles relax your skeleton can finally settle back into its natural alignment.
- Breaking Up Adhesions: Over time your muscles and fascia can get “stuck” together. We work to break up those sticky spots so your muscles can glide over each other during movement.
- Increasing Body Awareness: One of the biggest benefits of a session is proprioception. You leave the table with a much better sense of where your body is in space which makes it easier to maintain good posture throughout your day.
Better Mobility Equals Better Life
When your posture improves your mobility follows suit. Suddenly reaching for a high shelf or twisting to check your blind spot does not feel like a chore. You breathe deeper because your ribs have room to expand and you have more energy because your body is not working twice as hard just to keep you upright.
If you are tired of feeling stiff and compressed let’s get you back to your full height. Your spine will definitely thank you.
